THE WORLD OF WORK

Binghamton Adult Education working in conjunction with American Civic Association:

Offers a free Adult Education Program for specific Refugees, Asylees, and enrolled ESL students; "The World of Work". The goal of this program is to prepare individuals for working in the United State and assist them in gaining meaningful employment.  This program consists of five modules each of which are designed to improve a specific skill and give the students confidence and the knowledge necessary to start a career.

 

World of Work is an education series presented by the ACA and Binghamton Adult Education that prepares refugees, asylees, and ESL students for employment in the United States. The classes are offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM. To be eligible to take part, you must be a document permanent resident and 16 years of age or older and not currently in school and you must either be a refugee or an asylee that has not be in the US for over 5 years or any enrolled, active ESL student. The program consists of 5 modules, each of which is designed to improve a specific skill and give the student confidence and the knowledge necessary to start a career in the US. 

THE WORLD OF WORK MODULES:

World of Work Orientation Module

In the world of work training module the Refugee, Asylee or ESL student will learn how the entire employment process works in the United States. Items in the training manual will be, but not limited to, job search, local job search resources, employment agencies, what employers will expect of their employees, employee rights, paycheck deductions, the United States tax process, documents need during the new hire process i.e. I-9 and W-2, what to do if you receive an employee warning, and the proper method of leaving a job for better employment opportunities. When this course is completed the participant will have a well-rounded understanding of what to expect in today’s U.S. workforce.

In the job application training module the Refugee, Asylee or ESL student will learn the skills necessary to, access, complete and submit applications with local employers. Participants will do written exercises, worksheets and leave the training with not only completed applications but the skills necessary to complete applications in the future. During this module, a letter of reference will be developed for the participant to use when they present their application to the potential employer.

In the Interviewing skills training module the Refugee, Asylee or ESL student will learn the skills necessary to present themselves in a confident, positive manner during the interview process. Participants will participate in several simulated interviews, ensuring they are comfortable and have a good understanding of what will transpire during the interview.

In the Employment Skills training module the Refugee, Asylee or ESL student will receive a high-level overview of the local employment area, job opportunities and an understanding of the skills required for open job positions. In this module, the AEP supervisor will gain an understanding of the participants’ skills and preferred careers. Items in the training manual will be, but not limited to, definitions of vocabulary used in this module, data sheets on targeted employers, maps of the local area, the local transportation system and how to use the system. Participants’ transferrable job skills will be discussed, participants’ job interest appraised, review documents required for employment in the U.S, and discuss local organizations that can help improve required job skills.

In the resume preparation training module the Refugee, Asylee or ESL student will learn the skills necessary to, and receive a completed resume to present to local employers. Items in the training manual will be, but not limited to, vocabulary used on the resume, the visual appearance of a resume, examples of job skills, the importance of emphasizing the participants’ skills on the resume that fit the job applying for, important aspects of work history, outside interests and the development of a resume for the participant. In this module, AEP will assist the participant with modifications to the resume as required during the employment process.

Eligible Individuals:
  • Documented Permanent and

  • 16 years of age or older and not in school and

  • A refugee or an asylee that has not been in the United States over five years or

  • Any enrolled active ESL student
